Memorial and Honorary Gifts
Your memorial gift to the Food Bank can help perpetuate the values and ideals that guided someone's life. We will send a card to the family or loved one of the person you memorialized notifying them of your gift. When making your gift, please let us know the name and address of the person whom should receive the card.
Gifts may also honor a person during his or her life or commemorate a significant event like a birthday, wedding, or holiday. For gifts of $10 or more, we will send an elegant card to the honoree notifying them of your gift. For gifts below $10, we are happy to send an electronic card via email. When making your gift, please designate the street or email address of the person whom should receive the card.

Matching Gifts - Double the Impact of Your Gift!
Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by their employees. To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, please enter your employer's name below.
Follow your company's procedures and Second Harvest Food Bank will do the rest! The impact of your gift may be doubled or possibly tripled! Some companies also match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.

Gifts of Stock
Donations of securities that have appreciated in value are exempt from the long-term capital gains tax that would be imposed if you sold the securities and made a cash donation to Second Harvest.
For example, if you decide to give shares of stock you purchased over one year ago for $4,000 that are now worth $12,000, you would not only get a deduction for the stock's full current market value, but also would avoid paying 20% tax on the $8,000 gain. Second Harvest incurs no capital gains taxes when it sells the securities, so your donation of stock would provide the full $12,000 in value, or 24,000 meals, to our neighbors in need.
The donation process is simple:
- Submit our online Stock Gift Form or print our Stock Gift Form and email, fax, or mail it back to the Food Bank to ensure your gift is processed and acknowledged properly. By completing this step, you will receive a tax receipt listing the estimated value of your shares as of the date of transfer.
- Initiate a gift of securities through your broker using Second Harvest's brokerage house and account number. The following information is also listed on the Stock Gift Form:
Merrill Lynch — DTC# 5198, Account # 233-04337
Second Harvest Food Bank's contact at Merrill Lynch is Joe Thomas at (408) 283-3030.
Please contact Ali Duncan at aduncan@shfb.org or (408) 266-8866 ext. 261 with any questions about donating stock to Second Harvest.
The Charitable IRA Rollover is Back!
A special opportunity to give to Second Harvest Food Bank through your IRA has been extended through the end of 2011.
Thanks to this provision, if you are 70 1/2 years of age or older, you can distribute any amount, up to $100,000, from your IRA to Second Harvest Food Bank now through December 31, 2011. This amount will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year and it will not be treated as taxable income.
It is wise to consult with your tax professionals if you are contemplating a charitable gift under the extended law. Please feel free to contact Major Gifts at 408-266-8866 ext. 281 or gmalone@shfb.org with any questions you may have.
